According to a letter sent to WTA players, unvaccinated tennis stars will be allowed to play in the Australian Open, but will face two weeks of strict quarantine and regular testing.
Australian ministers said players could not enter the country for matches without sparks.
But the WTA Players’ Council says it has been said that all rivals could move to Melbourne in January.
The agency says Australian tennis thinks entry rules are “significantly improving”.
Last week, Victorian Prime Minister Daniel Andrews said he did not think an unvaccinated tennis player would be granted a visa to enter Australia.
A significant number of tennis players – including 35% of those on the men’s ATP tour – remain unvaccinated.
Novak Djokovic, the world number one and nine-time Australian Open champion, said last week that he did not want to reveal his vaccination status.
The 34-year-old Serb added that he was not sure how to defend his title in Melbourne, where he could claim the record of 21 men’s Grand Slam titles.
A letter issued to WTA players states that fully vaccinated players must be tested within 24 hours of entering the test, but there are some:
- No need to quarantine or stay in the bubble
- No restrictions have been imposed on them
- Complete freedom of movement
Unvaccinated players should:
- Upon arrival, apply for 14 days of mandatory hotel quarantine
- Take regular tests
All players, regardless of vaccination status, must show a negative test within 72 hours of leaving.
Australian tennis has not commented on the arrangements for the unvaccinated players.
“We are optimistic that we will be able to hold the Australian Open as close to pre-epidemic levels as possible,” the governing body said in a statement.
The letter also states that the opening qualifying round of the Grand Slam of the Year will be held in Melbourne Park.
With the country’s borders still closed and entry under tight controls, Australian tennis was planning to play qualifiers in Dubai or Doha, such as the 2021 tournament.
At this year’s event, 1,000 players, officials and support staff were required to complete a 14-day quarantine period upon arrival in Australia.
Some people were not allowed to leave their rooms on their flights after being diagnosed with coronavirus, which led to frustrated players complaining and having to set up temporary exercises in their rooms.
