Leave no trace: Dispose of waste properly
The third principle of Leave No Trace is the proper disposal of waste. When discussing LNT, most people immediately turn to human waste disposal when talking about it. But this is not the only issue that concerns the proper disposal of waste.
First, it is important to have a plan for collecting all the garbage and rubbish. Sometimes there is rubbish that is difficult to pack, think gray water or toothpaste, but there are ways to deal with it …
This is what happens when you wash your dishes in the backyard. Almost all of the food waste is left in your pots and pans. Thus, there are several ways to deal with this issue.
drink it – The most extreme LNT practitioners drink their gray water. If you can do this without coughing, you are better than me.
Smooth it out – The most common method is to strain your water so that all the pieces of food come out of it. After cleaning your dishes, you can easily pack them.
Scatter itWhile it is preferable to strain or drink water, there are some areas where it is recommended to spread your container water on the road pebbles. These are usually the front camps of the country.
Many people do not like to swallow toothpaste, although this is one of the options for this type of waste. Another option is to “raspberry” it. In other words, spit with your mouth closed and allow the toothpaste to spread on the floor and stain.
So what about human waste disposal?
As we all know, human waste comes in two main forms: urine and feces. However, sometimes it comes in other forms as well. This may include sanitary pads, condoms and vomit.
In a forested area, urine can usually remain anywhere. However, in the mountains you should try to urinate on rocks away from fragile wastes. Mountain goats love the salt in human urine and tear the ground to reach it.
Climbers should avoid urinating in cracks on multi-terrain climbs. It is better to urinate on the rock to spoil the urine. When someone urinates in the cleft, it often does not spoil and stinks of everything.
There are several ways to deal with solid human waste. The two most commonly accepted methods are digging a catholic or collecting them all.
Catholics are the most common method of disposing of human waste in secluded areas. The idea is simple, you dig a hole and bury your feces. When you’re done, put your toilet paper in a zippered bag.
The following is a brief description of Catholics from the Leave No Trace for Outdoor Ethics:
Catholics are the most accepted method of waste disposal. Find Catholics at least 200 feet (about 70 adult steps) from water, trails, and campsites. Choose an inconspicuous place where other people are unlikely to walk or camp. Dig a hole 6-8 inches deep and 4-6 inches in diameter with a small garden trowel. The cathode should be covered with natural material and replaced after finishing. If you camp in the area for more than one night, or if you camp with a large group, the catholic sites should be widely dispersed.
These are commercial bags used to transport human waste. Common brands used include WAG Bag, Rest Stop and Biffy Bag. The idea is simple.
You defecate in a bag …
Most garbage bags come with toilet paper, wipes and a dual bag system.
In areas that are heavily used and difficult to dig, garbage bags are the best option for disposing of human waste. These bags are usually used in mountainous and winter environments. Finally, they can be used to dispose of other human waste such as tampons and condoms. These types of items should always be packed, no matter how far behind you are …
Other techniques and thoughts
There is no doubt that kettles and garbage bags are the most common and probably the best option for defecation. But there are a few other techniques that may be used in areas where there are very few people.
When I think of these techniques, I think of very vague mountains or large traverses that are unusual and take all the garbage too long (more than four days). If any of these techniques are used in popular areas, it will have an immediate impact on visitor experiences and water quality. And it probably makes it an unpleasant place to visit.
Smear technique – With this technique, the fecal material is rubbed thinly on a stone in the sun. The idea is that the waste dries and explodes. But for this to work, the garbage must be spread out so thinly that it is no thicker than the width of a coin.
The smear method is used too much. It is commonly used in areas with large user groups so that fecal matter does not decompose before being exposed to others. And sometimes people use this technique in shady areas where the garbage is never spoiled.
To split – In this technique, garbage is thrown into the gap. Obviously, this will eventually open the way to the watershed under the glacier. In obscure glaciers, this is not so important. But if you see others on the refrigerator or looking for a boot pack, the remote refrigerator is probably not enough to use this technique.
Stool bird – This one is very simple. You defecate on a rock and throw it off a cliff or moraine, the idea is that it sprays and spreads everywhere to break down quickly. Needless to say, this is for very distant places.
Burning toilet paper Some people like to burn their toilet paper and bury it in a catholic or let the ashes spread. This is not a recommended method, as toilet paper never burns completely, and also poses a risk of forest fires. That being said, if you are completely against carrying your toilet paper, this is probably a better option than putting it around. If you choose this technique, please make sure the toilet paper is completely gone and no shiny ash or patches are left.
And finally I mentioned vomiting. If vomiting occurs, it should be buried immediately. Vomiting attracts a variety of animals.
There is no doubt that the best way to keep the places we renovate clean and beautiful is to properly dispose of the waste.
