Few adventures will take you to the unique beauty of Alaska as you make your way through the remote desert and protected Katama National Park. Here you see volcanoes soaring over suffocating rivers of salmon, and brown bears feasting on berries. The only way in and out is by boat or plane. What happens in between is walking at its best. This seven-day, ten-person trip for experienced backpackers shows an aspect of the situation that few have seen. It starts with a floating plane that departs from the village of Port Alsworth and lands you in the depths of Katama, landing wherever the pilot can safely land. You pick up a spot 30 miles away, carry your backpack full of food and supplies, and walk across the treeless tundra. No two journeys are ever alike.

Typically, groups start near Coca-Cola Lake, at the source of the Alagnak River, and walk six to eight miles a day, rising to an altitude of 2,000 feet, to reach Lake Ayna, a wildlife-rich area. There is no route, so how you get there depends on the weather, the view and the roughness of your group. Do you go around that 3,000-foot peak or just climb it? At night, wherever you are tired, you pitch a tent and take part in cooking. Hard-working rewards include a look at some of the densest populations of brown bears on the planet – multiple viewing is almost guaranteed – and curious Caribbean herds thundering in the meadows to see you.

“I’ve been to every state except Alaska, and backpacking in Katama is a lifetime opportunity,” says Chris Keys, editor, who joins you. I can not wait to share my passion for the outdoors – and out of-“With the singers taking part in this amazing journey.” Be warned, though, that the sound of the plane coming at the end of your journey will be clearly annoying to the savage you have become. – Team Neville
